end of this page.)
Clarence ADAMS and
Annie WIBLE had the following child:

Clarence ADAMS SR.
SECOND
GENERATION
2. Elmer
Clarence ADAMS SR was born on SEP 17 1893 in Philadelphia, PA. He died on
DEC 30 1971 in Bucks County, PA.
Elmer's father
reportedly left when he was 5 years old. Elmer and his mother reportedly ran a
boarding home in Atlantic City, NJ.
WW I civilian
draft registration has Elmer Clarence Adams, b. 9/17/1892 in Philadelphia, PA,
living in Philadelphia, PA.
He was married to
Anna Rebecca QUIG (daughter of John Edward QUIG and Emma LaClair BERRY).
Anna Rebecca QUIG was born on MAR 1 1890 in Philadelphia, PA. She died on
DEC 3 1954 at home of a cerebral hemorrhage in Philadelphia, PA. She was buried
in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Burlington, NJ.
Anna Rebecca
worked in a bathing locker room in Atlantic City, NJ, where she met her future
husband. Elmer Sr. was living on Mulberry Street, Philadelphia, PA prior to his
marriage. Anna was living in Beverly, NJ, below Burlington, NJ prior to her
marriage.
According to the
original Social Security Application for Account Number Form, dated 9/25/1936,
Elmer states that he was born in Philadelphia, PA and was born 9/17/1898.
Elmer and Anna
Rebecca married and had their first child in Atlantic City, NJ. They moved to
Philadelphia, PA around 1917.
Elmer delivered
milk by horse and wagon, drove a Mount Tano grocery truck (before
supermarkets), was a taxi cab driver, was a driver for Atlantic Oil, and drove
a cement truck for the Warner Company, 1616 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA and
was a member of the Teamsters' Local Union No. 470, C.I.O. Elmer was a baseball
fan and enjoyed smoking pipes and cigars.
Ed Hodum, Jr.
states:
“Regarding Grandpop Adams, I remember when he passed
away. I was on guard duty in the RVN when I got the call. I had just visited
him that summer, before I was sent overseas. I think he passed away in a
nursing home in NE Philly, on Roosevelt Boulevard. Nazareth was the name, I
think. It was still there last time I was in Philly. Pop also spoke German,
according to Mom. And he cheated at cards. I can tell you that, if it weren't
for him, we would never have made it. There was a period of about a year, when
Mom was sick and had to have an operation. My father stopped sending child
support in the hope that he could force Mom to agree to divorce him, so that he
could marry the woman he was living with. Anyway, Pop used to bring a box of
groceries to the house three times a week. It was always the same thing:
Wheaties, powdered milk, day-old Jane Parker bread, tea. It was boring, but it
got us through a difficult period.
As I said, Mom loved to play pinochle. Pop was
usually her partner and she was often afraid to play a card because he would
erupt vociferously if he disagreed with her play. Pop loved baseball and would
often watch from his porch whenever we had a game going in the street. He,
along with my brother Bill Davies, were my male role models growing up. I
learned from them to be a hard worker, and to be honest. The last time I saw
Pop alive was during the summer before he died. I was about to go overseas and
Mom took me to visit him in Pleasantville. I was in uniform that day and that
was the first and only time he told me he was proud of me.”
Anna played the
piano, enjoyed walking and smoking cigarettes and liked to crochet. Before the
birth of her last child, Anna began to work at a cigarette factory at 3rd
Street and Ontario Avenue. She would take her daughter, Mildred, to a day care
at Front Street and Lehigh Avenue while she worked. Anna stopped working during
her pregnancy with Edwin.
Elmer and Anna had
4 children and also raised their grandson, Richard Hayes from the time he was 6
weeks old. They resided at 3249 N. Howard Street, Philadelphia, PA.
The 1920 Philadelphia, PA Census taken
February 18, 1920 has the following:

In a telephone
conversation with Edwin Adams on 9/9/99 he states, Elmer Sr. went to Colorado
to visit cousins in early 1960's, probably Colorado Springs. Edwin did not know
who the cousins were. This author suspects that they may have been Edwin
Millard and Victor Millard. Mildred Adams LaBadie states that Edwin Victor
Adams was named for her father's cousins, the Millard brothers. They had a
sister, Estella Millard, who married Ezra Eugene Gant. Estella and Ezra Eugene
moved to Temple City, Los Angeles, CA.
(See Author Note at the end of this page for more information on the
Wible and Millard connection.)
Elmer Clarence
ADAMS SR and Anna Rebecca QUIG had the following children:
+3 i. Elmer
Clarence ADAMS JR.

died of lung cancer and is buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Burlington, NJ.
THIRD
GENERATION
3. Elmer
Clarence ADAMS JR was born on FEB 3 1915 in Atlantic City, NJ. He died on
APR 3 1973 in Philadelphia, PA. He was buried in Greenmount Cemetery,
Philadelphia, PA.
When he was about
2 years old, his parents moved to Philadelphia, PA. Elmer, Jr. had polio as a
child and had a noticeable limp as a result, with one leg being shorter than
the other.
He was married to
Kathleen Rhoda TUMMON (daughter of Thomas TUMMON and Mabel VOSPER) on MAR 20
1937 in Providence Church, Front Street and Allegheny Avenue, Philadelphia, PA.
Kathleen Rhoda TUMMON was born on SEP 22 1919 in Fowey, Cornwall, England.
One day in 1932, Elmer,
Jr. attended a church activity with a Sunday school teacher friend of his.
Kathleen was a member of the Providence Church, Christian Endeavor, Front
Street and Allegheny Avenue, Philadelphia, PA, and was present when Elmer, Jr.
arrived. Kathleen remembers what a nice looking man Elmer was. Kathleen said
that Elmer later told her that when he saw her that day, he knew he had met his
future wife. Elmer began attending church regularly and he and Kathleen dated
for five years prior to marrying.
Elmer, Jr. and
Kathleen were married in the same church that they met in. They lived with
Kathleen's parents on Duffield Street for two years. Kathleen's mother returned
to England for some time. Elmer and Kathleen rented a place on Hope Street,
where Kathleen's father lived with them. In 1942, Elmer and Kathleen bought a
home at 1513 Rosalie Street, Philadelphia, PA. Kathleen resided in this home
for 52 years.
Elmer, Jr.
graduated from Stetson High School, Philadelphia, PA. While dating, Elmer and
Kathleen attended Mastbaum High School in the evenings. Elmer took machinist
classes and Kathleen took sewing and cooking classes.
Elmer, Jr. worked
as a machinist at the Frankford Arsenal, Philadelphia, PA during WW II. Prior
to the war, Elmer took the exam for policeman and fireman. After the war, he
received a letter from the Philadelphia Fire Department. He accepted the job
and worked as a fireman for 20 years: 10 years at 4th and Race Streets and 10
years at Engine 38, State Road and Longshore Street, Philadelphia, PA. During
and after his fireman years, Elmer also worked as a machinist at Bridge Food
Machine Company in Palmyra, NJ. Elmer also spent four years in Greenland as a
fireman and then a machinist after his retirement from the Philadelphia Fire
Department.
Elmer, Jr.
suddenly became ill at the age of 58 while he and Kathleen were visiting her
mother and brother in New Jersey. He was hospitalized in New Jersey briefly and
released with no identified diagnosis. He and Kathleen returned to Philadelphia
where he was admitted to the hospital and died suddenly from polycythemia.
Kathleen states that Elmer was a fixer and a wonderful family man.
When Kathleen was
about 8 years old, her father left England for the USA to look for work. About
a year later, he sent for his wife, three daughters and two sons. His family
arrived on the H. M. S. Majestic. When Kathleen was about 13 years old, she
left the USA on the America for an 8-month visit to her homeland. She returned
to the USA on the Olympic. It would be another 62 years before Kathleen would
visit her birthplace. This time, she would board a plane instead of a ship. Her
son, George, took her back to England for her 75th birthday for nine days.
Although not many family members remain, Kathleen did visit many childhood
friends. She now writes regularly to one childhood friend, Jean.
The Tummon family
lived with Kathleen's mother's sister on Carl Street, Philadelphia, PA. They
moved a few times and finally settled on 4103 Frankford Avenue, Philadelphia,
PA for about ten years. They later moved to Duffield Street in the Frankford
section of Philadelphia, PA.
Kathleen worked
for the Philco Company for more than 6 years prior to her marriage. She scraped
wires for radios for many years and later became an inspector. Kathleen enjoys
crochet, sewing and crossword puzzles.
Elmer, Jr. and
Kathleen had a vacation home built in Estelle Manor, NJ prior to 1954. Kathleen
has been living with her children in the Dover, NH area since 1994.
Elmer Clarence
ADAMS JR and Kathleen Rhoda TUMMON had the following children:
+7 i. Robert
Elmer ADAMS.
+8 ii. Frederick
Thomas ADAMS SR.
+9 iii. Dorothy
Joan ADAMS.
+10 iv. George
Walter ADAMS.
4. Jessie
Brelsford ADAMS was born on JUN 8 1916 in NJ. She died in AUG 23, 1995 at
Northeastern Hospital, Philadelphia, PA.
During her
illness, prior to her death, her son Donald took care of her. His mother left
her home to him.
Ed Hodum, Jr.
states:
“Mom had dehydrated that summer and her kidneys
failed. She was supposed to undergo Dialysis treatment the week of her death.
The nurses were giving her a sponge bath to prep her for her first treatment
the following day. They turned her on her side to wash her back and she exhaled
and passed away peacefully.
During WW2, she was a trolley operator for PTC. I
think she operated on the #60 line, which ran through Kensington, along
Allegheny Avenue. Mom loved her grandkids and animals. If there was a stray cat
or dog in the neighborhood, they could always count on a meal at her house and
she often wound up taking them in.
Mom bore a total of ten children; eight by my father.
Only five of the ten have survived her. The last, a daughter named Jeanine, I
believe, died as an infant in 1960.
The two toughest things she ever dealt with seemed to
be her father's death and the death of her brother Elmer. She often talked
about those events. She was proud of the military tradition in the family,
starting with your dad. Mom said proudly, 'My brother Ace was a Marine'.
Mom loved to play cards, especially pinochle. I
remember many a summer night when Mom, Grandpop Adams and the Sheridan’s
(Franny and Jim, 3247 N. Howard Street) would play on a table set on either the
sidewalk or Pop's porch, when they played pinochle until the early morning
hours. They would drink something called a "highball" and the
Phillies game would always be in the background for Pop. He loved his Phillies!
He even drank Ballantine beer because they sponsored the Phillies broadcasts
and he smoked (what else?) Phillies Cheroot cigars. Mom was a good woman;
strong, honest and intensely loyal. She was always embarrassed that her middle
name was Brelsford. Now that I have found your page, I know where the name came
from. Mom worked at various times at Horn & Hardardt on City Line Avenue
and Kelly’s Seafood house in the Reading terminal. She also worked at the
Parker Hotel in Center City. She never got past 8th grade. She was a tomboy as
a young girl.
My biggest regret was that, on the night she died, I
had gotten a call from my brother Bill's wife Pat, saying Mom had taken a turn
for the worst. I lived 67 miles north of Philly at the time and I jumped into
my car immediately and headed to Philly. I told my then-wife to page me with a
911 if she got a call that Mom had passed away. I drove down the NJ Turnpike at
90 MPH. Just as I was getting off in Bristol, PA, I received a page.....911.
Mom was gone. I got to the hospital and was allowed to spend a few minutes
alone with her. The thing I noticed was that she seemed to be exhausted, yet,
in a funny way, finally at peace. I also noticed how distraught the nurse's at
the hospital were at her passing. They adored her.
I also have an anecdote that involves your dad. To
this day, on the roof of Mom's house....there is evidence that the roof had
been worked on by your dad, my brother Rich Hayes and my brother Bill Davies.
Apparently, your Dad was first and he painted the following words on the roof:
"Ace does it again." Richie followed with, "Rick does it better."
Bill ended it with, "Davies does it BEST."
She was married to
Richard HAYES. She was divorced from Richard HAYES. Jessie ADAMS and
Richard HAYES had the following child:
+15 i. Richard
Jessie HAYES.
Jessie Brelsford
ADAMS was married to William Hayden DAVIES SR (son of David DAVIES and
Elizabeth JOHNSON). William Hayden DAVIES SR was born JUL 14 1892 and
died MAY 16 1965. He is buried in Northwood Cemetery, Cheltenham Avenue and 15th
Street, Philadelphia, PA. Jessie
Brelsford ADAMS was divorced from William Hayden DAVIES SR.
Jessie ADAMS and
William DAVIES SR had the following child:
+14 i. William
Hayden DAVIES JR.
She was married to
Edward Charles HODUM SR. Jessie ADAMS and Edward Charles HODUM SR had
the following children:
+11 i. Edward
Charles HODUM JR.
+12 ii. Anna
Laurie HODUM.
+13 iii. Donald
Roy HODUM SR.
5. Mildred Anna
ADAMS was born on APR 14 1922 in Philadelphia, PA.
Mildred completed
10th grade at Kensington High School. On Labor Day weekend, just prior to the
start of the 11th grade, Mildred broke her shoulder while at the New Jersey
shore. She had to wear a body cast, therefore she did not complete her
schooling. When Mildred was 58 years old, she proudly received a G.E.D. after
attending classes at Neshaminy High School, Langhorne, PA.
She was married to
Henry Kay LABADIE (son of Henry LABADIE and Anna KAY) on MAY 30 1942 in

and Allegheny Avenue, Philadelphia, PA. Henry Kay LABADIE was born on
AUG 7 1919 in Philadelphia, PA. He is also known as Hank.
After Mildred and
Henry married, they lived in an apartment at 431 E. Alleghany Avenue. When
Mildred became pregnant, they bought a house on Orkney Street. They sold this
house after about a year and Mildred and her son John moved back with her
parents for about 1½ years while Henry was in the Navy. In 1947, Mildred and
Henry bought a house at 3342 Philip Street.
In November 1951,
Mildred closed up the Philip Street house and took John to Morocco to be with
Henry, where they lived and John went to school, until August 1952. In 1965,
they bought a house at 37 Dolton Road, Feasterville, PA. In May of 1995,
Mildred and Henry sold their home and became residents at Twining Village, 1505
Covered Bridge Road, Holland, PA.
Mildred worked for
the Philco Company for a short time in the early 1950's. She worked as a
seasonal tax examiner for the Internal Revenue Service for 15 years after she
moved to Feasterville.
Mildred and Henry
were members of bowling leagues for many years, were members of the African
Violet Society (Mildred served as President, circa 1960), and have been very
active members of the Neshaminy Senior Activity Center.
Mildred and Henry
have traveled extensively around the world via boat, car, bus and air.
Henry's father was
a weaver. Henry's mother, Anna was a weaver from the age of 13 until she
retired at age 80. She began to weave silk and switched to worsted (wool for
suits). She took many night classes and always liked sewing. After retiring,
she earned some money sewing.
Henry grew up on
American Street, but after his parents separated when he was a child, he and
his mother lived on Front Street.
Henry graduated
from Northeast High School, 8th Street and Lehigh Avenue in 1936. He graduated
from Drexel University in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree in
Electronics. He has been a member of the Mensa Society.
Henry was drafted
into the U. S. Navy from 1945-1946. During this time, WW II, he served as a
seaman first class and ended up as ET3C (electronics technician third class).
Henry was
re-called to active duty from the Navy Reserves during the Korean Conflict from
1950-1952. He served as an electronics communications technician (started as
ET2C and ended ET1C) in Morocco during this time.
In 1948, Henry
began working as an Engineer at the Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia, PA.
Around 1950, he began working as a computer programmer at the Arsenal. He
retired from the Arsenal in 1975. He then worked as a computer programmer at
the Yellow Book Company, until he fully retired in 1990.
Mildred Anna ADAMS
and Henry Kay LABADIE had the following child:
+16 i. John
Henry LABADIE.
6. Edwin Victor
ADAMS was born on AUG 24 1928 in Hahnemann Hospital, Philadelphia, PA. He
weighed 6 lbs., 2 oz. He was discharged from the hospital on 9/5/1928.
Edwin attended
Northeast High School at 8th Street and Lehigh Avenue, Philadelphia, PA. Edwin
worked as an usher at a movie theater, for Garrett-Buchannon making lampshades,
and across the street from his parent's home for the Artloom Company making
rugs prior to his marriage.
He was married to
Charlotte Marie BRINDEL (daughter of Clyde Wesley BRINDEL and Florence
Walburger TREFFEISEN) on JUL 1 1950 in Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church,
25th St. and Montgomery Ave., Philadelphia, PA. Charlotte Marie BRINDEL
was born on MAY 23 1932 in Kensington Hospital for Women, Philadelphia, PA.
In 1948 Edwin

Charlotte Marie on 1/9/1949, a Sunday night, at a dance at St. Joseph's
Orphanage for Boys.
He resided 3249 N.
Howard Street during childhood in Philadelphia, PA. Edwin and Charlotte lived
with Edwin's parents in this same home after they got married. When Edwin got
called to active duty he had to leave Charlotte with his parents. Charlotte
stayed with Edwin's parents for a short while and then lived with Edwin's
sister Mildred and her husband Henry LaBadie for several months.
Charlotte then
moved to Camp Lejuene, North Carolina to be with Edwin. After about a year of
marriage, Edwin was sent to the Mediterranean. Charlotte then moved back to
Philadelphia, PA, to live with her parents at 3302 N. Hancock Street.
Edwin served in
the U. S. Marines as Private, Corporal and Sergeant. Edwin states that about
1100 men were going out for a two-week maneuver at Camp Lejuene at one point.
During this maneuver, his shoulder came out of the socket when moving his
machine gun from one arm to the other. He was hospitalized for several days.
During his hospitalization, 7 men were killed and 14 men injured when mortar
rounds went off. He states that he could have been one of these men had he not
been in the hospital. Live ammunition was not used after this.
When Edwin was
discharged from the Marine Corp on 2/2/1952, he returned to 1751 Taney Street,
Philadelphia, PA to live with Charlotte and her parents for a short time, until
they bought their first home at 3108 N. Arbor Street, Philadelphia, PA in 1952.

Charlotte took lessons and enjoyed playing. After she married, she had a piano
and later bought an organ, which she also enjoyed playing.
Charlotte attended
Kensington Girls High School on Carl Street, around Front Street and Kensington
Avenue.
At age 16,
Charlotte began working at N. W. Airs Advertising Company. She worked in the
mailroom on the addressograph and mimeograph machines. It is reported that she
earned $16.84 clear for a full time week, and paid $12.00 a week to her parents
for room and board. She worked for this company until she married at age 18 and
was then earning $18.50 per week.
Charlotte worked
for the Philco Television Company for about six months after she married for
about $35.00 per week. Charlotte later worked for Sears in the accounting
