FIRST GENERATION

William P. QUIGG was born about 1841 in Philadelphia, PA.

 

From recorded marriages at the National Archives, Philadelphia, PA, dated December 20, 1865, William P. Quigg is a salesman, residence WarwickH-1206, place of birth Philadelphia, PA, age 24.

The following is quoted from e-mails dated February 2000 from Jacqueline Quig Burg (JQB) of Florence, NJ. JQB is the daughter of John Wallace Quig and granddaughter of Edward Albert and Mary Hoffner Quig.

"My father brought over a family bible he had in his possession. My dad said he got the bible from Alice Quig after Ed died, so it may be the one Aunt Jess had. It is very old about 4 inches thick. On the cover is ornately engraved Hamlet H. & Anna R. Berry. Inside it says a gift from my pop December 15, 1875. Apparently this was given to Emma LaClair."

Inside are original birth and death entries:

Hamlet H. Berry died 11/4/1897

Anna Rebecca Berry died 11/12/1888

John Edward Quig birth 5/19/1866, died 9/15/1913

Emma LaClair birth 5/3/1867, died 4/19/1900, married 1/31/1889

An original marriage certificate dated 6/4/1865 for William P. Quigg and Sarah H. Hunsworth married in Philadelphia.

Also notes that John Edward Quig was their only son. Apparently the two G's were last used by William.

SECOND GENERATION

2. John Edward QUIG was born on MAY 19 1866 in PA. He died on SEP 15 1913. He was buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Burlington, NJ.

He was Irish. He was a paperhanger. He was living in Beverly, NJ, below Burlington and in the Florence, NJ area.

Robert Quigg, son, age 10 born NJ, father born PA, mother born PA, has attended school since September 1, 1909.

Francis C. Quigg, daughter, age 2 born NJ.

John Edward Quig was married to Emma LaClair BERRY (daughter of Hamlet H. BERRY and Anna Rebecca UNKNOWN) on JAN 31 1889. Emma LaClair BERRY was born on MAY 3 1867. She died on APR 19 1900. She was buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Burlington, NJ.

The 1890 Philadelphia, PA City Directory has the following:

Hamlet H. Berry, clerk, St. Alban Hotel. 

Emma was English. Emma died shortly after the birth of Robert.

John Edward QUIG and Emma LaClair BERRY had the following children:

            +5        iii.        Edward Albert QUIG.

              6        iv.        William Robert QUIG was born on DEC 7 1899 in NJ.

JQB states, "according to my father, he disappeared and no one seems to know where he went."

Claire Hesselholt, granddaughter of Frances C. Quig Hesselholt states, “Robert moved with his step-mother Lillie Tindell Quig to Idaho and Robert died in the late 1940’s.”

John Edward Quig was married to Lilly M. TINDELL (daughter of Samuel Watson TINDELL SR and Elizabeth AMES) in 1901. Lilly was born JUL 30 1875 in Jacksonboro, TN. Lilly moved to Idaho sometime after John’s death.  Lilly died in 1963.

The 1930 Boise, Idaho Census taken April 2, 1930 has the following:

Lily E. Quigg, head of household, owns home, value of real estate $2,500, owns a radio, age 54 born TN, widow, age 23 when first married, father born TN, mother born Maine, boarding home owner.

Robert Quigg, boarder, owns radio, age 30 born PA, single, father born PA, mother born TN, garage owner and operator.

Note: Five other boarders in home.

John Edward QUIG and Lilly M. TINDELL had the following child:

THIRD GENERATION

3. Anna Rebecca QUIG was born on MAR 1 1890 in Philadelphia, PA. She died on DEC 3 1954 in Philadelphia, PA. She was buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Burlington, NJ.

She was married to Elmer Clarence ADAMS SR (son of Clarence ADAMS and Annie WIBLE). Elmer Clarence ADAMS SR was born on SEP 17 1893 in Philadelphia, PA. He died on DEC 30 1971 in Bucks County, PA. He was buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Burlington, NJ.

The 1920 Philadelphia, PA Census taken February 18, 1920 has the following:

Elmer Adams, Jr., son, age 15 born NJ, attending school.

Jessie Adams, daughter, age 13 born NJ, attending school.

Elmer re-married after Anna Rebecca died to Jen Duesenberry circa 1962. Elmer and Jen eventually moved to 48 E. Decatur Avenue, Pleasantville, NJ. Jen died before Elmer.

Anna Rebecca QUIG and Elmer Clarence ADAMS SR had the following children:

            9          ii.         Jessie Brelsford ADAMS.

4. Jessie Emma QUIG was born on FEB 9 1892 in Philadelphia, PA. She died in OCT 1982 in Burlington, NJ.

She was married to Ward BRELSFORD (son of William BRELSFORD and Mary UNKNOWN) in 1913. Ward BRELSFORD was born on MAY 21 1891 in NJ. He died in JUL 1971 in Burlington, NJ.

JQB states:

" I knew Aunt Jess (Brelsford) when she was alive. She was in the Masonic Home in Burlington, NJ before she died so her house was cleaned out. I heard she gave a lot to the neighbors. There was a neighbor named Lorraine she was close to and she gave her many hummels. She had a large collection. I was not involved in any of this so I don't really know and I don't think the neighbors were interested in family papers.

Ed and Jess were sort of on the outs. He went to visit her in the Masonic Home and I heard she told him not to visit her. But they both were stubborn and he said he will visit her anyway."

William Brelsford, father, age 76 born PA, age 27 when first married, father born NJ, mother born NJ, retired, not a military veteran.

Mary Brelsford, mother, age 69 born NJ, age 26 when first married, father born NJ, mother born NJ.

Jessie Emma QUIG and Ward BRELSFORD had the following child:

            12        i.          William BRELSFORD died in sailboat accident at age 21 on the Delaware River.

5. Edward Albert QUIG was born on MAR 30 1897 in Burlington, NJ. He died in FEB 13 1978 in VA.  Edward is buried at Beverly National Cemetery, Burlington County, NJ.

Anna Quig Gray (AQG) states:

“I don't know how far Dad went in school. I know he didn't graduate. The story goes that Lilly put him on a labor farm when he was 13. I think. He lied about his age and went into the Army. After two years, mostly overseas, he worked several different jobs. He worked at a weaving mill when I was very young. He was a sexton at a church in Philadelphia, PA and he also worked as a yard-man for many people in and around Beverly, Yardley, Riverside, etc. He worked as a Security Guard at the Dade County Community College in Miami, FL until he retired and moved to Virginia.”

He was married to Mary L. HOFFNER (daughter of Wallace M. HOFFNER and Carrie A. UNKNOWN). Mary L. HOFFNER was born MAR 9, 1899 in NJ.  She died MAR 29, 1988 in NJ.  Mary and Edward eventually divorced.

Carrie A. Hoffner, wife, 53 born PA, age 20 when first married, father born PA, mother born PA.

Margaret V. Hoffner, daughter, age 23 born NJ, single, bookkeeper in auto agency.

Edna D. Hoffner, daughter, age 20 born NJ, single, stenographer in chemical industry.

Mary L. Quig, head of family, renting $20 per month, age 31 born NJ, married, age 25 when first married, teacher in a public school.

John W. Quig, son, age 4 years 4 months born NJ, father born NJ, mother born NJ.

Robert E. Quig, son, age 2 years 2 months born NJ, father born NJ, mother born NJ.

Edward Albert QUIG and Mary HOFFNER had the following children:

            13        i.          John Wallace QUIG.

            14        ii.         Robert E. QUIG.

Edward Albert Quig was married to Alice May WORRELL (daughter of George C. WORRELL and Jennie UNKNOWN). Alice May WORRELL was born on AUG 7 1924 in PA. She died on DEC 25 1990. She is buried in Beverly National Cemetery, Burlington County, NJ.

AQG states:

“Mom graduated when she was 16 and worked at Woolworth's in Trenton, NJ. I think. She worked different places until she met and married Dad. She was a Stanley Home products dealer for 25 years and became a district manager in the Philadelphia, PA area.  When we moved to Miami she worked at an auto appraiser’s office doing everything from billing to payroll.

Mom and Dad came to visit us in Virginia and they liked it. Mom went on disability just before coming to Virginia, due to real bad arthritis in her hands. Once in Virginia, neither of them worked.”

JQB states:

"At Ed's funeral in Beverly, NJ (Veterans Cemetery) a friend brought his sister, Jess to the cemetery, but she did not get out of the car. I talked to her and she recognized me. My grandmother, Mary Quig, Ed's first wife was there and his sons Jack and Bob. Also there, from his second marriage, Carl and Bill. Ed was cremated in Virginia and buried in Beverly National Cemetery, Burlington County, NJ."

Anna Quig Gray (AQG states:

“I was at Daddy’s funeral, with my kids and my husband. We were living in Germany at the time. Daddy was to be the best man at my brother Bill’s wedding, February 18, 1978. Because of the expense, we had not planned to fly home for Bill’s wedding, but since Daddy died just a few days before, we were able to attend Bill’s wedding and my husband stood in as best man.”

Alice had a son named Carl from a previous relationship. Edward adopted Carl.

Edward Albert QUIG and Alice WORRELL had the following children:

            17        iii.        William Albert QUIG.

7. Frances C. QUIG was born JAN 19 1908 in NJ. She died SEP 5 1999 in Castleford, Twin Falls, Idaho.

According to the archived papers of Samuel Watson Tindell, SR at Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, TN, Frances wrote “America’s Pastime” in 1930. Samuel Watson Tindell was both a professor at and president of the Carson-Newman College.

Frances was a 1928 graduate from Albertson College of Idaho, Caldwell, ID.

She was married to Earl E. Elliott on DEC 2 1932 in Caldrell, Boise County, ID.  The marriage was brief and ended in divorce.

Frances was married to Soren Conrad HESSELHOLT (son of Mads Larsen HESSELHOLT and Ana Mathilde CHRISTENSEN) in 1940.  Soren Conrad HESSELHOLT was born NOV 30 1895 in Skagen, Hjorring, Denmark.  He died JAN 1960 in Idaho.

Frances C. QUIG and Soren Conrad HESSELHOLT had the following children:
