"WASHINGTON'S PART in the WORLD WAR"
Excerpts from above named book will be featured here.
| World War One ended November 11, 1918. This
year marks the 82nd anniversary of that Armistice. Twenty eight nations
sent their young into that War. The small towns of Washington and
Canonsburg, Pennsylvania were no exception. Information included here is
from the book titled above. There is no publisher or date listed,
but obviously was asembled after the War, probably around 1920 .
It features photos of most of the men listed and a short paragraph about
each veteran. There are over 1300 entries but not all Washington
County veterans are included. It was given to me by my aunt Lillian
Mary Crum Claffey, herself pictured as a Red Cross Nurse. (page 16)
Although the book may not be a complete record of those who served, it does contain many pictures, birth dates, parents, home addresses, departure dates, assignments and date of discharge. There is also much general information about the war itself. The phrase "War to end all wars" heard in 1917, never became a reality. Nevertheless, these men and women responded to duty in their own time to a troubled world. For this they have our thanks and admiration. In the interest of brevity, only the most important events are listed here. Each catagory will be individually alphabetized for the convenience of the reader. Other than alphabetizing, names are listed as they appear in the book. It is divided into sections 6 sections, These sections are linked on Veterans Corner Index
