Excerpts from Our Dixon Family History Book Regarding James
Dickson (b 1750 NC )
including some corrections & additions by Alma aed-h
Page 46
James was the 8th and last son of John Dickson was born May 9 1750 in
Duplin County North Carolina. He died in April 1812 in Duplin County
(sic: May 10 1812 as found in DAR-Patriot Index aed-h)
He first married Dorthy PEARSALL ( DAR-Patriot Index aed-h) in about
1766 and later married Susannah Carr (widow of James Carr).
Even though James Dickson was born and died in Duplin County_he moved
around as did his restless brothers and cousins. He went first to SC to
visit his relatives about the time Reuben was born_to claim bounty
land_but returned to NC for reasons we are not sure. ( Maybe he wanted
to be close to his father as the dark clouds that would lead to the
Revolutionary War were gathering)

James and Dorthy had 9 children:

Reuben b. 1767 SC

Edward b. April 17 1775 NC

William Pearsall b. Oct 7 1781 NC

Alexander b. Feb 20 1784 NC

Ellinor

Margaret

Elizabeth

Anne

Name Unknown

James Dickson acquired bounty land in SC May 28 1767 under the Bounty
Act of 1761. Many Dickson cousins moved to SC from NC. Although
James claimed his SC bounty land we know he went back to NC where he
served in the Morgan District of Lincoln County Revolutionary War
Militia as #3169 in Warringtons Company. We do not know exactly why
he served in the home gaurd Militia_but it could have been due to his
large family_the close proximity to his elderly parents ( and
Uncles)_plus there was limited military activity in that area of NC.
However_James was awarded much land in Tennessee for his
service rendered _but we can find no record detailing his actual service.
Given this_we have concluded that James may have been a spy. ( The
following Pg 46-B in my Dixon Family History Book offers a copy of
Index [Pg 372] listing James as one of the NC Rev War Soldiers ) See
my source notes to obtain copy of book aed-h
Nevertheless for this service_he was eligible for bounty lands in
western NC_TN_in the Pendelton District of SC and eventually in GA.
In SC James Dickson received land in the Pendelton District in what is
now Newberry county on Garvin s Creek of 23 Mile River on the
Savannah River.
Our grandpa Reuben Dickson also applied for land in the Pendleton
District 1786-1788 time frames and was awarded two plots in the upper
Spartanburg County area of Pendleton; one for 640 acres and one was for
360 acres_both on the Pacolet River. (Note: This River is along the
boundaries of Spartanburg and Cherokee County in extreme NW SC.
Reubin Dickson was found listed within the Indexes of Location
Book A SC 1784-1786 as well as Book C SC 1785-1788 ) aed-h
James Dickson is shown on the Chatham Co GA tax list in 1793 being in
the 3rd District. He also received goods as a friend in the Will of
William Thompson. (Will Book A_March 12th and 18th_ 1794)
James Dickson first received 200 acres of bounty land in Washing
County GA in 1788 as he continued his southward trek. He later received
100 acres more land in Washington County in 1790 and in 1800 he
received 210 acres more. In 1799_James s son Reuben Dickson
received 347 acres of his own bounty land in Washington County GA.
(the land having been originally surveyed in July 12_1781_next to his
cousins_Michael Dickson and Thomas Dickson.
Washington County was originally formed Feb 25 1784 from lands of the
Creek Indian Cession of 1783. Sandersonville is the County Seat. From
the large original County of Washington the counties of
Greene_Hancock_Johnson and Montgomery were later formed. A terrible
fire in 1855 destroyed all of the records of this coundy including the
marriage license of Rueben and Polly Dickson.
We know that times were hard on the frontier for our grandparents.
Reuben Dickson appears on Washington County records as a
tax-defaulter in Captain Irwin s District in 1791. The writer (Bobby
Henson) feels this was because he and his father were already looking to
join their cousins and sons in East TN. Reuben also served in the GA
Militia in Washington Co being accounted in Capt Parrott s Co in
1793_5th Co. 1st Btn. 2nd Regiment_so he had not yet left for
Tennessee. Reubens land was recorded in Deed Book D-E in Washington
County GA.
Reuben Sr. registered twice for land in the 1805 GA Lottery_but failed
to obtain any on either pull. To draw twice he had to be married which he
was. He does not appear in the 1800 US Census of the Pendleton
District.
Apparently Reuben Sr moved back to NC with his father around 1805 as
his first two children are born there.
Dickson Family History Book Page #48 continued...
Also_his father had been granted bounty land in extreme northeast
Tennessee on the Holston River in 1787 time frame_Patent #2798. They
may have explored that land for a short time after leaving GA. Reuben
Sr and family appear on this land in US Census 1810 on the Holston in
what is now Grainger County.
The land on which Reuben Sr_his wife Polly and family settled upon on
the northside of the Holston River was in the old original county of
Grainger TN which was formed in 1796 from parts of Hawkins and Knox
Counties_with its county seat at Rutledge. Later the part of Grainger
County in which Reuben Sr settled was moved into what is now Overton
Co. TN.
Reuben Sr and Polly Dickson raised their family and appear to have lived
out their lives in Overton County except for an excursion into Lawrence
County in 1820. While retaining his land in Grainger/Overton Co_Reuben
Sr and Polly appear in 1820 US Census with his sons John and Reuben Jr.
John was born in 1805 in NC and Reuben Jr was born in NC in 1809. Lucy
was born in 1822 in TN. We also reason to believe that Reuben Sr had
three other sons_James_Samuel and Huey since these young men appear
in Lawrence and later in Franklin Counties. Our research also indicates
that another family_perhaps Pollys parents or older brothers and sisters
may have lived within the household of Reuben Sr. Reuben Sr may have
been married twice as he is much older (33 years) than Polly. His earlier
records were burnin in the devastating fire which burned all records and
the Courthouse of Washington Co GA in 1855.
In the US Census TN_1830_Reuben Sr is found again with his family in
Overton Co TN on land his father had received in bounty.
( Note: His father James had returned to Duplin Co where he died in
1812). Reuben Jr and Lucy stayed in a part of Lawrence Co which was
now White County.
On 17 January 1838 our grandpa Reuben Jr Married the lovely Sarah
Harriett Newman Baites and he is in southern TN in Franklin Co north
of the City of Winchester TN in a settlement called Estille Springs.
His father Reuben SR is still living in Overton Co.
The 1850 Tennessee Census Record for Overton County shows the
following:

Household Record for Reuben and Polly Dixon

Reuben Dixon Head 83 b. NC

Polly Dixon wife 50 b. NC

Sarah 16

(Note: We think that SARAH found above is the daughter of Reuben Srs
son John who is taking care of her grandparents)
