HARDYMAN CLAIMS HE SHOT
TO DEFEND DAUGHTER'S HONOR
Father and girl testify Walter Dixon
was attempting criminal assault
Brasher holds farmer under bond of $1,000
Girl cried after the shooting
"Am.glad to see you die"
Robert Hardyman, age 58, a pumper who works at Virginia Mines in the
lower part of the county, was held by Coroner Brasher Monday morning
for the killing of Walter Dixon.
Hardyman shot and killed Dixon in the presence of Zooma, his 19 year
old daughter, Saturday night about midnight on the road between Adger,
where the girl had been to church, and her home.
Zooma Hardyman made a statement under oath before the coroner that
Dixon was in the act of a criminal assault upon her when her father came
up and without saying a word fired and killed Dixon.
When Dixon fell over on the ground, according to the statement of the
elder Hardyman, the girl jumped up and said, "Die, darn you. It does me
good to see you die".
Hardyman surrendered Sunday morning to Deputy Sheriff K.K. Hickman,
saying he shot Dixon in self-defence; that when he found the young man
in a compromising position with his daughter, Dixon attempted to pull his
gun and he (Hardyman) shot and killed him.
Walter Dixon was 25 years of age. He came to this section from
Tennessee. He got into trouble in the Blue Creek region at Johns less
than 10 miles from the scene of his death and killed John Dagnan, a
former constable of the precinct. After remaining in jail for some time,
he made bond and was awaiting trial when killed.
After getting out of jail, Dixon returned to the Blue Creek district
and engaged in conducting a billiard and poolroom and soft drink-business.
Hardyman is a pumper at the Virginia Mines. His, family consists of a
wife, seven daughters, the eldest of which is 22 years of age, a cripple
and one son. The entire family lives in a house of three rooms.
Hardyman had warned Dixon to remain away from the home. Zooma
